Music contest

Set Yourself Free from anything that restricts you

 from becoming the person who you want to be.

 

The submission date has been extended to April 20th.

LifeSteps Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and Pick With Austin want to help teens make good choices through the power of music.

The contest will officially be part of the National Drug Facts Week, nationwide event organized by NIDA, National Institute on Drug Abuse. National Drug Facts Week is an annual health observance week for teens to shatter the myths about drugs and drug abuse.  

The music contest is a partnership between LifeSteps Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and Pick With Austin to provide youth with substance abuse and suicide prevention information.

DATES:

The contest will be launched on January 26 to February 6, 2015.

Entries will be accepted from February 9 to April 20, 2015.  The winner will be announced on April 30, 2015.

An award ceremony will be hosted during the National Prevention Week (Mental Health Month) May 17-23, 2015.

CONTEST:

Entry Any youth between the ages of 14-18, residing in Williamson County can submit an original piece of music that celebrates a drug-free lifestyle or brings attention to the real-life consequences of depression or negative self-image, especially as it relates to preventing teen suicide.

Submission:  To enter, participants must submit an original music video and original music/lyrics composition.  Videos will be submitted to a Set Yourself Free Facebook page administered by LifeSteps’ Coalition and Pick with Austin.

The songs will be judged equally on originality, lyrics, melody and composition as well as accurate portrayal of the importance of healthy personal choices or the dangers of drug abuse and addiction.  The review committee will include: music professionals, prevention specialists and counselors.

Prizes:  Two winners will be selected – 1st and 2nd place. 

The first and second prize winners will each receive an acoustic guitar donated by Pick With Austin, a certificate of recognition and the opportunity to professionally record the song on a Pick With Austin CD, to be released later in the year. 

All the winners will have their music video posted on the LifeSteps and Pick With Austin websites and featured on the organizers’ social media channels.

The winners may have the opportunity to engage in press or media interviews.

 

REQUIREMENTS AND RULES:

1. Entries missing any of the required items below will be automatically disqualified.

2. This contest is open to U.S. citizens or legal residents between the ages of 14 and 18 residing in Williamson County, TX.

3. Parents or legal guardian(s) of applicants will assume responsibility for review of entry and application content, including compliance with these contest requirements and rules.

4. Entrants should submit one entry form. Any submission may have multiple performers on the song but only one name may enter the contest.  If there are multiple performers on a song, the division of prizes is the responsibility of the winner.

5. Contestants must perform their own music or be on the performance (singing or playing).

6. The Contest Committee will judge submissions based on originality, lyrics, melody and composition as well as their accurate portrayal of the importance of healthy personal choices or the dangers of drug abuse and addiction, or any negative health aspect related to suicide. For accurate scientific information on drug abuse and addiction, entrants are encouraged to use the teens.drugabuse.gov and www.texassuicideprevention.org.

7. Each entry should be in a CD or DVD in mp4 format. Prior to submitting, please verify that your entry is able to be viewed or listened to on a standard CD/DVD player or PC/MAC computer.  The video or music/lyric composition must be no longer than 4 minutes. Entry materials will NOT be returned to the entrant.

9. Submissions must also include:

Form 1:  Registration form.

Form 2: A statement on why the contestant is interested in the project. For example, your own experiences, experiences with a friend or family member who is struggling with substance abuse, depression or has committed  suicide  (maximum 2 pages).

Form 3:  Lyrics.

Form 4:  Waiver form. LifeSteps Coalition and Pick With Austin require separate consent forms from all contestants, signed by the student and their parent(s) or legal guardian(s)

10. The video or music/lyric composition must be original and not previously recorded or copyrighted material.

11. The video or music/lyric composition must not contain material that violates or infringes on another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity, or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright or license infringement.

12.The video or music/lyric composition must not contain brand names or trademarks.

13. The video or music/lyric composition must not contain material that is inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, defamatory, slanderous, or libelous.

14. The video or music/lyric composition must not contain material that promotes bigotry, hatred, or harm toward any group or individual or that promotes discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, or age.

15. The video or music/lyric composition must not contain material that is unlawful, in violation of, or contrary to the laws or regulations of any state where the video is created.

16. Entry constitutes permission to use winner’s name, likeness and voice for future advertising and publicity purposes without compensation.
